Nikita Khrushchev becomes Premier of the U.S.S.R. Prince Charles, son of Elizabeth II and future husband of Diana, becomes the Prince of Wales. President Eisenhower sends troops to Lebanon. The United States launches its first satellite.
In March, unemployment in the U.S. reaches highest mark since 1941. Pizza Hut opens in Kansas City, MO. Credit cards get a boost; American Express debuts, as does BankAmericard, the forerunner of Visa. Elvis Presley is inducted into the Army. Governor Faubus shuts down Little Rock schools.
